Information

Flamengo x America-RJ was considered a great Brazilian derby back in 1981 (and you could say that as well when America faced Fluminense, Vasco and Botafogo). The Mecão was a very important Brazilian and Rio de Janeiro team, but gave its "last breath" (national-wise) in the 1980s with the title of the "Torneio dos Campeões" in 1982 (an attempt of the Brazilian Football Confederation to create another official national tournament in Brazil) and reaching the semi-finals in the 1986 Brazilian National Championship. The great encounter that could have happened would have been beetwen Zico (18 goals) and Luisinho Lemos (16 goals), the frontrunners for the Rio de Janeiro State Championship's top goalscorer award. However, Luisinho (who is America's all-time top scorer) left to UD Las Palmas during the championship. The great news in the powerful 1981 Flamengo side was the young Leandro beginning to play as a starter for the Seleção. America had a very hard-working team that was seeking a victory so they could play in Brazil's National First Division (back in 1981, the State Championships defined the spots for the top tier in Brazilian football, with the top 5 of Rio de Janeiro's State Championship playing there). Marinho Peres, captain of the 1974 WC Brazil National Team, former FC Barcelona player and a legend for Portuguesa and Santos, was America's head coach. -No commentary from the end of the 1st half untill the end of the match-
